A little north of Watkins, on the shore of Seneca lake, is a neck of land which at one time was called Coal Point. Here it was the practice to transfer to barges quantities of coal brought by rail from the mines of Pennsylvania, and much of this coal was thence carried to the salt works at Syracuse for the purpose of manufacturing that staple. Now this same piece of land is known as Salt Point, and upon it has been erected one of the largest salt factories of the vicinity. As an interesting commentary on the early relation between salt production and modes of transportation, a traveler's journal of nearly a century and a quarter ago may aptly be quoted. In recording the events of a journey by boat from Albany to Seneca lake, by way of the natural streams, Mr. Elkanah Watson writes. under date of September 15, 1791, concerning a visit to the salt springs near the locality where Syracuse now stands. Of his arrival at the springs, after a sail up Onondaga, or " Salt lake," as he calls it, he says: "We steered by our map, and compass; and with some difficulty found the creek on which the salt works are now erected, half a mile from its mouth, at the foot of a hill. These works are in a rude, unfinished state, --but are capable of making about eight thousand bushels of salt per annum; which is nearly the quantity required for the present consumption of the country. But the mines are so luxuriant, and abundant, as to afford a supply tot the United States, even when our population shall reach one hundred millions.
